Visit the Actual Disney Castle: Neuschwanstein Castle

This castle and the views surrounding it are breathtaking.

I don’t use that word lightly. This part of the world is just stunning. There’s a reason it is the inspiration behind the Sleeping Beauty’s castle…it’s stunning and absolute perfect.

Where to Stay

We stayed in a nearby town called Fussen. It’s about 2 hours from Munich and only 4km from the castle. We flew into Munich and decided to drive to Fussen the day before our visit to the castle, that way we could start the day at the castle and spend as much time as we wanted there.

Tickets and Parking

There is plenty of parking near the castle, but I would highly recommend getting there sooner rather than later. You actually are supposed to pick up your tickets at the counter 90 minutes before your called time (that’s about how long it would take if you walked the entire way up). Tickets do sell out, so you should purchase tickets to your preferred day and time online here.

The Way Up and Down

On the way up, we opted for the bus. It’s a bit of a hike up the hill and we did not bring the stroller. You can also decide to take a horse and carriage on the way up. You can buy tickets up to the castle at the bus stop in the town. On the way down, we decided to walk to we could take in these sights!

View from the Bridge

The famous view of the castle (below) is from the Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge) which crosses the Pöllat gorge. Whether you walk or take the bus/horses you don’t want to miss this view. The bus dropped us off about a 5 minute hike from the bridge. From there, it’s probably 10-15 minute (downhill) walk to the castle.
